Please note! In a Georgian marriage certificate, as in most countries of the world, THE PATRONYMIC IS NOT WRITTEN for the spouses. There is no patronymic in Georgian certificates, and do not request it.

Please note! In a Georgian marriage certificate, as in most countries of the world, THE NATIONALITY IS NOT WRITTEN for the spouses. If you require a separate document on nationality — contact our agency.

You may refer to the old-style Soviet birth certificate, which indicates the patronymic and nationality. Please note that the format of the certificate has changed and is issued according to the form approved by law in Georgia.

  • As a basis for correcting the surname, first name in other documents obtained after marriage
  • For a residence permit in Georgia or other countries
  • To confirm kinship for relatives (family members) in descending lines

Where can I get a marriage certificate in Georgia

A marriage certificate in Georgia can be obtained in Tbilisi at the House of Justice, if you are sure that there are no errors in the civil act record. If there are errors or the marriage record has not been entered in the archive, you will have to contact the Civil Registry Office where the marriage was registered.

If you are divorced, but you were asked for a marriage certificate

Often in Europe or the USA, Canada, Israel, you are asked to provide information about your marriage, even if you are divorced or a widower/widow. In such a case, you can obtain an extract from the marriage record. The civil act record is stored in the Civil Registry Office of the locality where the marriage was registered.

What to do if you have an old marriage certificate, but a new one is required (or, for example, a new one is needed for an apostille).

If you have a Georgian marriage certificate from the Soviet era, unfortunately, such a certificate may not be accepted in European countries, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and many other countries. Furthermore, such a marriage certificate cannot be apostille certified or legalized at a consulate.

Can I get the original marriage certificate?

You can obtain the original marriage certificate from Georgia if you registered your marriage and have not yet taken the marriage certificate. If you have received it before, you will only be issued a duplicate. A duplicate marriage certificate has the same legal force as the original marriage certificate. It will state that it is a duplicate. This has no legal consequences for you, your spouse, or your children or grandchildren.

Can I get the same marriage certificate as I had — in Cyrillic?

Unfortunately, you cannot obtain such a Soviet-style certificate. Such forms have long been invalid — almost since the collapse of the USSR. You will receive a duplicate (if the person is alive or not divorced, for whom this document is being obtained) or an extract from the civil act record / from the archive (if the person is deceased or divorced).

I had a marriage certificate in Cyrillic, and I received a new one in Georgian. Why?

Obtaining a certificate in Cyrillic is inadvisable. This will raise many questions from receiving authorities both in Georgia and abroad. Such certificates are purchased on the black market. And this is criminally punishable. The state language of Georgia is Georgian, and all documents and record-keeping are conducted in Georgian. If you had a non-Georgian surname or first name, they are preserved but transliterated according to the rules of the Georgian language. That is, when transliterated from Georgian into your native language, they most often retain identical pronunciation, with some exceptions. To resolve such issues, it is advisable to contact our company.
